Continuing Course Enrolments Overview

When a student does not finish a course within the Term and/or School Year they were originally registered for, a school may allow them to continue the course into the next Term and/or School Year. In PASI this is represented by marking the initial Course Enrolment with a Status of “Continuing (Course Enrolment Status)” and having a Course Enrolment that starts after the initial one to ‘continue’ the course enrolment for the student.

For example:

  • Student registered for Eng 30-1 at McNally for Semester 1. School creates a Course Enrolment for the student.
  • Student was not able to finish the course because of special circumstances
  • School decided to accommodate this student to provide an extra month of schooling for the Student to finish the course. In PASI, this is represented by:
    • The School updates the existing Course Enrolment with a “Continuing” status. No mark is submitted for that Course Enrolment.
    • School creates a new Course Enrolment for the student with an Entry date that is after the predecessor Course Enrolment, to indicate the student is continuing the Course.
    • Once Student finishes the course, the School submits the mark on successor course enrolment which indicates the student has now completed the course.

Continuing Course Enrolments should be used by the school to indicate that the student intends to finish the work for a course at the same school, just in a longer timeframe than originally expected. It should not be used if student have no intention to complete the course work or if the student moves to a different school.

Continuing Course Enrolments can also be used to span the student's studies over multiple School Years if required (as Section for a single Course Enrolment is tied to a single School Year), for cases such as distance learning where the class schedule does not necessary conform to a traditional School Year schedule.

Predecessor Course Enrolment

A Course Enrolment can be a Predecessor when all of the following is true:

  • Course Enrolment Status = Continuing, and
  • There exists at least one suitable successor for this Course Enrolment

Successor Course Enrolment

A Course Enrolment can be a suitable Successor when:

Multiple Course Enrolments

It is possible for student to continue a course for more than 2 Course Enrolment terms; a 'chain' of continuing Course Enrolments can be established by setting up multiple Continuing Course Enrolments for the same course/student/school. Once the student completes the course work, their mark should be submitted on the last Successor of the chain.

Note that in the example above:

  • CE#3 and CE#2 are both suitable successors to CE#1.
  • CE#2 cannot be a predecessor to CE#1 because CE#2's Exit Date is not after CE#1's Entry Date
  • CE#3 cannot be a predecessor to CE#1 or CE#2 because its Entry Date is after their Exit Dates.
