Student’s are identified by a public identification number known as the Alberta Student Number (ASN). This is the number that PASI Clients will use to uniquely identify one student record from all other student records. If a PASI Client is unaware of the Alberta Student Number, the Identify Student service can be used.

There are times when a single ASN can no longer be used to uniquely identify a student. This occurs in one of two situations:

• A student is assigned more than one ASN, or
• One ASN is being used for more than one student.

When these situations are identified, Alberta Education can ‘manage’ ASNs to correct the situation. This management results in an ASN becoming:

• a Primary ASN
• a Secondary ASN
• a Deactivated ASN
