Blending School Awarded Marks and a Diploma Exam Marks

When a student has one or more school awarded mark(s) and and one or more diploma exam mark(s) in a diploma course the Official Mark Value of the Official Mark is calculated by “blending” the Diploma Exam Mark Value and course mark values together at some ratio (50/50, 70/30, and 90/10).

All plausible diploma exam and course (school) mark “blends” are calculated and compared to create and choose an Official Mark, assign it's selected marks, and capture course achievement information.

The following Course Work and Evaluations records are not blended:

Creating an Official Mark

The Official Mark calculator creates an Official Mark for the student using the logic below:

Attribute Value
Official Mark Course Code The course code of the course enrolment
Credits Awarded

When the student passes the course they are awarded the number of credits attempted (from the course enrolment). Traditionally diploma courses are worth 5 credits and students with a mark value less than 50% receive 0 credits.

Second-pass calculation rules apply. For example, students that have already received credits in a equivalent course may receive 0 credits.

Official Mark School Year The largest school year from the selected marks that contributed to the final official mark value.
Official Mark Value

Straight Blending (Same Range)
When blending marks, if the Course Mark Completion Date of the school mark and exam mark record are both before September 1, 2015:

  • 50% of the Official mark is based on the school awarded mark, and
  • 50% of the Official mark is based on the diploma exam mark.

If the school mark and the exam mark have a Course Mark Completion Date that is on or after September 1, 2015 but before September 1, 2021:

  • 70% of the Official mark is based on the school awarded mark, and
  • 30% of the Official mark is based on the diploma exam mark.

If the Course Mark Completion Date of the school mark and exam mark record are both on, and after September 1, 2021, the Official Mark is:

  • 90% of the Official mark is based on the school awarded mark, and
  • 10% of the Official mark is based on the diploma exam mark.

Crossover Blending
A school mark received prior to Sept 1, 2015 can only be blended at 70/30 when:

  • It is the highest school mark received but the highest exam mark received is after Sept 1, 2015 (exam mark improved)

An exam mark received prior to Sept 1, 2015 can only be blended at 70/30 when:

  • It is the highest exam mark received but the highest school mark received is after Sept 1, 2015 (school mark improved)

A school mark received prior to Sept 1, 2021 can only be blended at 90/10 when:

  • It is the highest school mark received but the highest exam mark received is after Sept 1, 2021

An exam mark received prior to Sept 1, 2021 can only be blended at 90/10 when:

  • It is the highest exam mark received but the highest school mark received is after Sept 1, 2021

Rounding
Once the marks have been blended, the result is rounded to the nearest whole number. For example, 69.5 is rounded up to 70. If this rounded mark is 48 or 49, then the mark is rounded up to 50. This means that a blended mark of 47.5% would be rounded up to a 50%. The blend that results in the highest Official Mark Value is then used in the final Official Mark.

Is Passing Official Mark If the Normalized Mark Value is a value of 4950 or higher, the official mark is considered a passing mark.
Mark Calculation Method Diploma
Official Mark Format Percent
Official Mark Status Available
Normalized Mark Value Normalized mark values for 30 level course (and thus all Diploma courses) are calculated at (Mark Value) * 100. See Normalized Mark Value for more information.
Official Mark Selection

When blending marks, at least one school mark and one exam mark will be selected, but up to 4 mark records may be selected.

Contributing School Marks
When there is only one school mark considered for blending, that record is selected with a selection reason of School Mark.

When there is more than one school mark considered for blending, the school mark that contributed to the final official mark value is selected with a selection reason of Highest Contributing School Mark.

Transcript School Marks
If the school mark with the highest mark value did not contribute to the final official mark, then that school mark record is also selected with a selection reason of Transcript School Mark.

Contributing Diploma Exam Mark
When there is only one diploma exam mark considered for blending, that record is selected with a selection reason based on the Diploma Exam Mark Status of the record.

When there was more than one diploma exam mark considered for blending, the diploma exam mark that contributed to the final official mark value is selected with a selection reason based on the Diploma Exam Mark Status of the record.

Transcript Diploma Exam Marks
If the diploma exam mark with the highest Diploma Exam Mark Value did not contribute to the final official mark value, then that diploma exam mark is also selected with a selection reason of Transcript Exam Mark.

Official Mark Annotation None
Achievement Date This represents the earliest date the student passed the course. As each blend occurs, if the blended mark value is a passing official mark, the achievement date will be the Course Mark Completion Date of either the school mark, or the exam mark (which ever is later). The blend that results in the earliest Achievement Date is then used in the final Official Mark.
Achievement School Year The school year on the school or exam mark that represents the Achievement Date.
Is Achieved If the Official Mark contains an Achievement School Year, then Is Achieved is True. Otherwise, Is Achieved is False.
