Notification of Home Education

This screen will be used by a myPass user to notify Alberta Education about a student receiving an education at home as outline under the Choice in Education Act.

Security Requirements

This screen is available to any myPass user (whether or not they are connected to any students). If the myPass user does have a connection to the Student it must be a Parent Guardian connection in order to see the Home Education tile under the Student Profile information.

If the myPass user does not have a connection to the Student they can access the Home Education Notification screen from the “Obtain Access to the Student Information via myPass” page. Select the “Where can I find my Alberta Student number?” link under the Alberta Student Number field. A pop-up will display. The link to submit a Home Education Notification can be accessed from the pop-up.

myPass Privacy Notice

myPass collects, uses and discloses personal information pursuant to sections 33©, 39(1)(a), 39(1)© and 40(1)© of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Alberta). Personal information is collected, used and disclosed as required for the operation of Alberta Education programs and activities, which may include registration for myPass, identity authentication, communications relating to myPass services, delivering services, maintaining records and sharing information to school authorities as necessary. User information, including the IP address and browser information, are logged and cookies are sent for security purposes.

Home Education Notification Privacy Notice

The personal information on this form is collected pursuant to sections 33(a) Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) by virtue of section 1.1 of the Home Education Regulation and 33© of FOIP as the information is directly related to and necessary for administering home education programs that are not supervised.

The information is collected, used and disclosed for the purposes of notifying Alberta Education that a parent/guardian intends to provide a home education program that is not under the supervision of an associate board or associate private school, and to allow the administration of these home education programs by Alberta Education, including any applicable investigations under the Home Education Regulation. The information may also be used to conduct statistical, evaluative, financial analyses relating to home education programs that are not under the supervision of an associate board or associate independent (private) school.

This information will be treated in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, the Education Act, and the Home Education Regulation, as applicable. Should you have any questions regarding this activity, please contact, Alberta Education, Field Services:

Home Education Notification Student Field

This mandatory drop down field is used to select the student associated to the Home Education Notification.

This field includes

  • Any student by which the user is connected as a Parent/Guardian
  • An Other option - labelled “the student identified below”

This field is only defaulted if the only option is the Other option.

When the value of this field is updated:

  • If an existing student is selected:
    • The remaining fields on the screen are populated based on the selected student and the parent record associated to the myPass Connection used.
    • The Alberta Student Number field is made read-only
    • All expandable fields are collapsed.
    • The student and parent document fields are hidden.
    • The student is used to capture the Home Education Notification Student.
  • If the 'other' option is selected:
    • The remaining fields are returned to their default value
    • The Alberta Student Number field is editable.
    • All expandable fields are expanded.
    • All fields are visible.
    • The Home Education Notification Student is not captured.

Home Education Notification School Year Field

This mandatory drop down field is used to select the Home Education Notification School Year.

This field includes any school years that are identified as a current school year + 1 and is defaulted to the greatest option.

Student Information

The following fields are presented under a Student Information header.

The following fields are entered in this section of the screen:

Provided ASN

An optional field used to capture the provided ASN for the student and is formatted 1234-5678-9.

  • Field restrictions include:
    • Only supports the entry of numbers (0-9)
    • Allows no more than 9 digits to be entered
    • Automatically formats the value entered as 9999-9999-9
  • Field Validation includes:
    • When any value is provided, it must be a 9 digit string. If the validation fails, the following validation message is returned: Please provide an ASN in the format: XXXX-XXXX-X.

While the format of the ASN will be validated, as the user may not be connected to the student, myPass will not validate that the ASN provided is valid. This information will be used during processing to help validate the identity of the student.

  • Validates the data provided
  • Captures the information entered as a Home Education Notification record
  • Sends a 'Home Education Notification Received' message to the user

If this completes successfully, the user is returned to their previous screen, either:

Validating the Data

As most of the validation on this screen is done via field level validations, the only validation required when the submit button is placed is:

  • Validating that mandatory data elements have been populated
    • If a mandatory data element has not been provided, the field is highlighted and, where appropriate, the following message is provided: This field is required.

Capture the Information

Assuming the validation passes, the information provided will be captured.

Sending the Message

Once the PDFs have been stored and the Home Education Notification record has been created, PASI will send a the Home Education Notification Received Message to the myPass user.
