Calculating Official Marks for Diploma Exam Courses

To Calculating First Pass Official Mark Values for Diploma Courses, multiple potential official marks may be calculated for different scenarios:

The Official Mark Calculator may calculate a potential Official Mark for diploma Course Mark in multiple categories. In the event that there are multiple potential official marks, the Official Mark will be used based on the categories in the following order:

Official Marks based on Course Work

Calculating an official mark based on course work can be divided into 3 sub-categories:

An official mark from each applicable sub-category will be calculated. In the event that more than one sub-category applies, the potential official mark with the highest1) mark value will be used. When Mark Values are the same, the Official Mark from the highest subcategory2) will be used.

Exception: The Achievement Date/School Year of the resulting official mark will be sourced from the potential official mark with a passing mark and the earliest Achievement Date.

Blending School Awarded Course Marks and a Diploma Exam Marks

For the vast majority of students, an Official Mark in a Diploma course is a blend of the student's Highest School Awarded Mark and the Highest Diploma Exam Mark for that course3).

Blending will not occur unless a student has both a Diploma Exam Mark as well as Course Work.

See Blending School Awarded Marks and a Diploma Exam Marks for more information

Mature Diploma Exam Marks

This category will only consider Diploma Exam Mark records with a Course Mark Completion Date that is on or after the student's Maturity Date.

Exams written after a student's maturity date can be used as 100% of the student's official mark in the course.

See Calculating Official Marks for Diploma Courses for Mature Students for more information.

Full Diploma Exam Exemptions

Students can be exempted from writing the diploma exam by applying for a Full Exemption. When a student is awarded a Full Exemption from the exam, assessment submits an Exam Mark with the Full Exemption flag, and the Full Exemption Exam mark represents 100% of the Official Mark. A Full Exemption Exam mark is never blended with a school mark, even if the blend is to the advantage of the student.

This sub-category considers all Course Mark as long as one of them is a Diploma Exam Mark with a status of Full Exemption (FE).

See Calculating Official Marks for Diploma Course with Full Exemptions for more information.

Diploma Course Evaluations

A Diploma Course Evaluations can standalone as a student’s Official Mark. These Official Marks are never applied to a student’s record where viable passing Course Work based Official Marks exist.

Official Marks that are created solely on a Credit awarding Diploma Evaluation always have a mark value of P. Failing Evaluations will have a mark value = ‘F’. They are effectively a method for giving a student credit in a Diploma Course where the student has not achieved the same through Course Work.

Evaluations represent 100% of the Official Mark for the course. They do not blend with Exam Marks or any other Course Work.

When a Passing Diploma Course Evaluation exists along with a Course Work School Mark or Exam Mark, the Official Mark is equal to ‘P’ (based on the Diploma Course Evaluation), and the School Mark or Exam Mark is NOT selected (for display on the Transcript).

See Calculating Official Marks based on Diploma Course Evaluations for more information.

Missing Course Mark

A Missing Mark Diploma Official Mark occurs when:

  • a Course Work based School Mark with a value exists without an Exam Mark,
  • a Course Work based School Mark with a value exists with an Exam Mark without a value,
  • an Exam Mark exists without a Course Work based School Mark record, or
  • an Exam Mark exists with a Course Work based School Mark record without a Mark Value.

These Official Marks allow for the School Mark or Exam Mark to be displayed on a Transcript when no other Official Mark scenario is viable. This category ignores Evaluations without a passing mark.

See Calculating Official Marks for Diploma Courses with Missing Mark Values for more information.
